Radon

EPA and other scientific studies show that the dangers of Radon gas are one of the least understood and most overlooked issues by the American Public. This is mainly attributed to lack of education by both the public and professionals as well as to the nature of the gas itself, i.e. it is a colorless, odorless, tasteless substance.

Radon gas comes from the natural breakdown of uranium in soil, rock and water and gets into the air you breathe. Radon is present just about everywhere in varying concentrations. It can get into any type of building, whether it be a home, office, or school, in varying concentrations. Sometimes these levels are high, sometimes they are not, depending on a variety of circumstances, including exact location, methods of construction, age of the building, and so on. You and your family are most likely to get your greatest exposure at home, because that's where you spend most of your time.

Radon is estimated to cause thousands of deaths each year because when you breathe air containing radon, you can get lung cancer. In fact, the Surgeon General has warned that radon is the second leading cause of lung cancer in the United States today. Only smoking causes more lung cancer deaths. If you smoke and your home has high radon levels, your risk of lung cancer is especially high. Additionally, recent research indicates that radon may be linked to other types of cancer as well by reducing the body's ability to fight off cancer cells.

Radon Testing

Testing is the only way to know if you and your family are at risk from radon. The EPA and the Surgeon General recommend testing all homes below the third floor for radon. (Source: EPA)

Our Radon testing is performed in accordance with the Standard of the Industry and EPA guidelines. We presently use an activated charcoal sampling method, utilizing 2 collection samples per tested area, that requires 2-4 days to complete (2 days is the usual time frame), and next business day results from the lab once the samples are collected. Additionally, long-term monitoring is also available in situations where short-term tests reveal that long-term testing is desired, or to check whether remediation efforts were successful. Cirrus Enterprises uses the finest labs in the U.S., as well as state-of-the-art methods for all environmental testing.
